okay
trying to spend my free moments at work doing something other than my compulsive blogging
why is it that some people have more healthy compulsions than I do
like a workaholic
or a compulsive athlete
my compulsions are always negative
like my compulsive eating or drinking
a thousand different formulas
none of them perfect
yet anyone of them can work
it may not be easy, but it can work
just don't give up
stay the course
Back on a 26 Incher?
sorta sucks

this morning I got up thinking I better start pushing some bigger rings. there is a race under a month away and all I have been doing this winter is eating bon bons on the couch and some less than occassional spins on the single speed (then there is the requisite short commute to work, better than nothing, or so I hope) so this am I got out a commuter bike that I have no great love for, a Cannondale Bad Boy. this bike was purchased because in its price range it was the only rigid fork bike that I could get through my local shop hook up. initially I was pleased. before the monkey my love for this bike had started to fade, now with the monkey....I am ready to put this bike up for adoption. the aluminum frame and fork create a very numbing feeling in hands and balls, an hour is all I can handle on this ride and well, that is not a good selling point for any bike. to add to the misery, the 26 inch wheels make the whole riding experience awkward. the wheelbase and top tube length seem so compact. the monkey is the first bike that fit me, now my variety of other rides are all awkward in comparision. the Karate Monkey has become a mirror for me as I mount my other 26 inch machines, I can see how my bear like frame dwarfs the diminutive wheels and frames......
now I need a 29 inch hardtail built up for dirt rides and for racing

starting to think about the C&O canal ride
186.2 miles in a day (plus the ride home, another 4 or so miles from its start, my rides end in Georgetown
my long rides tend to be about an hour and a half
not exactly a roadie over here
so this ride is a real battle of the spirit
but what bike would I ride
the cross bike has its selling points
but the dropbar hand position for touring really sucks
and the bad boy, as mentioned, is not a distance bike ((especially on suck pebbley terrain))

Free Lunch?
for years I have seen a similar sight as I ride through the city on my way home from work
at various corners throughout the city the homeless gather for the arrival of soup trucks
well, there may not always be soup
usually it looks like sandwiches, coffee, and maybe some fresh fruit
what is received is not what is important, the meat of this message is that when passing these lines of homeless people it is not uncommon for me to see a few couriers thrown into the mix
it has never been clear to me whether they felt they needed the handout, they deserved the handout, felt that they got by better by not purchasing all their meals themselves, or if they just found these sandwiches tastee
never stopped to ask
I have known people to handout the sandwiches
their stories usually involve a the long list of thankless complaints they get from the homeless
"I want one turkey and one ham"
"I don't like roast beef"
or whatever special order they may have
"no mayo"
"extra mayo"
who knows....
I recall trying to work a different set of systems when I was younger...
Happy Hour! We use to go to a variety of restaurants on their preferred happy hour nights. TACO NIGHT! Was always a favorite, but I was never too picky. We would go to any bar that was known for a serious happy hour spread. This was a money saver here in DC as well as out in Colorado. Normally we would order a single beer or a single Coke, but our trips to the Happy Hour Buffet were many. Then there was the discovery of a day shelter in our Neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant, Our Turn. Someone had told me that they had inexpensive juices and shockingly cheap pints of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. For some reason it never occured to me that these inexpensive services were not for me. Guess I felt that my long beard and hair was a good enough for me to pass as a person in need of a break. The flavors were usually odd ones, Ben and Jerry's Coconut or they had the Butter Pecan
the survival instincts of the courier have to be keen
especially in a time when the economy is so tight
more power to these guys for finding a way to survive

WOW!
this upgrade takes things to a new level
and a different direction
let me get some of this proud poppa thing out of my system
my pride is overflowing

oh
what the heck
one more

I had a variety of BLOG ideas
some that I thought to be real interesting ones
potential epic entries
but the ideas passed with the wind
perhaps if I am ever to be the Widget Maker that I dream of being I will have to live the rest of my life with a pad of paper on a string wrapped around my neck. Stopping my bike, my typing, or my fork at lunch to write down any brilliant brainstorm that passes through my head
SCREAMING MAN
sometimes I forget that I live in the city
sure this is not Manhattan nor is it Hong Kong
Washington DC is a city just the same, just a little like Mayberry than Gothem City
with living in the city there are an assortment of oddities and often some dangers

our neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant butts up against Rock Creek Park
our house and our front door looks out across to a small patch of woods with righteously tall old hardwoods
being that this is the city and this is seemingly remote area for the city
occasionally there are those that make the woods their homes
and I do not mean squirrels and turtles
now days there are less and less vagrants setting up camp
dog traffic is great enough to dissuade any new settlers
as well as the police responding to complaints and calls
but there are those that have refused to budge
SCREAMING MAN is one of these characters

over the years his "spot" has moved from location to location
finally settling in a sliver of land between Park Road and Beach Drive (aka Rock Creek Parkway)
he has no tent or any shelter to speak of
just bags of stuff and his trash, some of which I can not discern
each day he migrates about the city
he has been seen at various bus stops and resting on different front steps or stoops
I am never sure if he is headed to shelters, soup kitchens, or to make deposits in his Swiss bank account
his agenda is unknown to me
all I see is him marching up the street with his body slung over his crutches
his one shoe and his swollen foot without a cast but a slipper that would normally be worn over a cast

he ambles up the busy road at his own pace
screaming all the way
what he is saying or who is screaming at is unknown to me
we have spoken before
and he spoke clearly, politely, and in complete and articulate thoughts
he refused any food or clothing I offered
gave his thanks and moved on

each day he makes several passes by our house
our dogs love for him is only surpassed by their love for Mr. Johnson, our mailman
when they hear him (or maybe smell him) they go wild
rush to the door
pouncing on the plexiglass that blocks the glass
as the glass has been broken once
and we can not risk injury having it break again

the worry is not the barking
the worry is that our timing is such that his pass occurs either while I am already in the woods
or as we step out the door
the dogs will only chase and bark
perhaps that is enough, or in this case too much
there is no desire to torment this already tormented mind
yet there are worries and dangers
either the dogs could be leashless in the woods or my petite little lisa could be out with Dean at her side, Grant in the baby Bjorn, and the dogs on leash
there is no way she could contain the dogs
their might and their passion combined with their fit athletic frames would be more than she could handle
she would have to let the leash go before she injures herself or delicate baby Grant

there have been no incidents on my watch
lisa has not retold of any events
but a neighbor had a wine tasting party the other evening
at this party he retold a tale of him having to make an emergency stop as my dogs crossed the street to agress the Screaming Man
my apologies to the Screaming Man
my thanks to James for stopping in time
it is difficult to balance all the individual needs and all the different personalities of the people in such a compact space as Washington DC

sorry if my rants and ramblings have been more directionless than usual
perhaps it is sleep deprivation
perhaps it is just my way

the main thing may be I have the time to BLOG
but I do not have the time to proofread or edit
so I PUBLISH AND POST, PUBLISH AND POST!

excuse me while I PUBLISH AND POST

2.25.2004

this evening I did a drive by an old friend's house
well, since it was on bicycle, it was a ride by
it was like old times
cocktail hour on maryland avenue northeast
although water was my pleasure
I enjoyed the excuse to lengthen my ride home from work
it was cool to see Adam's most recent woodwork
his skill boggles the mind, it all happened so fast
the passion he has for his "craft" is visible

while there another friend questioned the design and purpose of the single speed karate monkey
having no luck in the past to explain the single speed to a non single speeder I reached for a metaphor
Stoff being a photographer I went for his craft/art (what ever art or wood working may be)
simple and plain
the single speed is a pin hole camera
sure I could take better shots with my Canon 35mm or even my Minolta 3.2 megapixel camera
but instead I choose a pinhole
and a sturdy and solid pin hole it is
not just a cardboard box, but an actual camera
to get the desired image it may take more work
but the final results can be so gratifying
knowing it was done with the pinhole camera

the visit was a drive by
a quick hello and than back headed into the setting sun
the orange sun splitting through the windows of the Capitol building
off for home
to walk the dogs and join my family at the dinner table
or try to catch up with them with whatever stage they are in the evening

just have to arrive alive
riding a bike in the city is like swimming in the Pirahna infested Amazon
nips at your feet
dipping and weaving, dodging and avoiding any and all dangers

(as it turns out Dean was feeling all sorts of active, so we took the stroller to the streets took in the sight of the black sky and the white moon, the air was brisk and refreshing, Dean learned the word archetechture as we looked at the national cathedral off in the distance, then he got to explore our elderly indonesian neighbors house as we invited ourselves in as house guests, we shared the joy of our new arrival of Grant and the pending arrival of their grandson, due in a month)
surfing the traffic on my single speed this evening I had a very Gollumesque experience
as I dodged in and out of the car traffic I argued in my head
"don't second guess yourself, don't second guess yourself"
verses
"check again, is that hole going to close, check again, is that gap big enough..."
the journey has a never ending rhythm of re-evaluation
never holding a straight line
accelerating for closing opportunities
creating options when doors shut before you
it is a game
a game with dangerous consequences
fun
but risky
the second you get too cocky, that is when you get slammed
man small....nature big
respect it
sometimes I add PSEUDO definitions to my BLOG
while other times I add real ones
this one is real
the mixing of lies with the truth has been a form of trickery that I have enjoyed implementing for years
also
hiding insults in compliments and vice versa is also a pleasure
anyway, here is that definition followed by a directionless rant about an education I never had

potvaliant (POT-val-iant) adjective, also pot-valiant

Showing courage under the influence of drink.
Such courage is also known as Dutch courage.

many years ago I had thought that I would be writing a thesis or some sort of PhD type of thing
but never took education to that level
as it turns out
going to class
doing the prepared reading
studying for tests
and
writing papers over an extended period of time with edits and revisions is better than the night before without spell check
were the actions of a student

to me being a student meant drinking excessively, sleeping late, and playing video games
oh, toss in varsity Div III soccer and various intramurals

with that said...
one of my thesis ideas pertains to this term, potvaliant
my intended title was to be, "The Fight or Fuck Response, with the Steak and Cheese Loophole"
Since I never pursued science with the usual routine of grants and such
I was forced to study myself and my own drunken behavior, in sociology this is called Participant Observation.
When going out drinking I found that our subject, me, would get very drunk very fast and keep on drinking. Once hitting the wall completely inebriation my goal of drinking and shooting pool moved to the pursuit of love, or more accurately lust. somehow the urges, hormones, and emotions all get confused, perhaps it was just the frustration of knowing I was not going to find a suitor that I often found myself in a situation of "fisticuffs." Not being a fighter, there was always the safety loop hole of the Steak and Cheese. Not finding love, and trying to avoid the fight, I found that our subject, again me, was placated by the greasy pleasure of a steak and cheese sub from any of the Korean markets of Sub joints littered about the city. Yums being a personal favorite, extra mumbo sauce on the fries please.

yum mumbo sauce
the condiment of the gods

my other thesis concept that never got developed
Art versus Craft

and the thought of not posting this rant crossed my mind
but being a tad off color can often happen when you are me

about stealing info from other blogs...
what can I do?
original thought is tough
we even RIP OFF ideas from ourselves
when was the last time you told a story for the first time at a party
we usually fall back on the stories that we know will entertain, as we know they entertained before

let me see what else is out there worth stealing and sharing....

scroll down to the Ian MacKaye article link
he talks about MP3 music downloads and how he feels about sharing music

STINK FACTOR
gear is expensive
when gear is used
gear gets worn
after some vigorous workouts gear can start to stink

the gear can be washed
but at the first healthy sweat that gear shows that it has a life of its own
the sweat is clean while the gear is dirty
the end result the rider carries the pungent odor that rubs off from the gear
this morning my gloves were the stinkiest item of all my gear

after removing all my gear, some mud covered, some clean, some pungent from the fresh sweat
once cleansing myself of STINK FACTOR from my odiforous gear with SPEED STICK and GOLD BOND I realized it was not enough
no time for a shower...just some soap to the hands...it may be time to retire some of this gear

another time I will tell the story of my proposal to Lisa
but this loser may not want this story told again

I' Don't

guess the Wizards were not the only losers that night

does anyone know if the world is making fun of William Hung?
life is pretty basic
there are some simple rules
here are some rules that I try to live by

GIVE A LITTLE, GET A LOT

DON'T ASK SOMETHING OF A PERSON THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO OFFER
(this way you will never be let down)

ATTENDANCE WILL ONLY TAKE YOU SO FAR, YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION AND TRY

TRY NOT TO BE A HYPOCRITE

and

KEEP YOUR PROMISES

life may be basic
but it is not always easy
we make it harder than it needs to be

more rules to come later

The Jam

if I had an iPOD
that is what I would be listening to
but I don't
as it would not be conducive to my current job or my bicycle commute
the body has five senses
the sense of smell is vital, but not so helpful in dodging traffic
sight is good
but hearing is tied so deeply into feeling
that I could not see giving it up
too many cars coming up fast and hard
some people
it is just best to get the fuck out of their way

(that is the word fuck twice in my BLOG today, now three...make that four times....I never BLOG like that...what is happening to me?)

there is Soft Rock
so I guess The Jam is Soft Punk!
but they are not soft at all, they are just more polished than most punk bands

more on Minor Threat/Ian MacKaye and Fugazi
there is one line in this article that says, "he passed on chances to be rich and famous..."
well, Ian is rich and he is famous
that may not have been his intention or his goal, but it is his reality
he did it on his terms
got rich even when he was not trying to
more power to him
he deserves it...
one might think that I was some huge fan
well I am pretty big, but not huge
and I am in some ways a fan
so I guess that I am a pretty big fan

with that said I am pretty big not matter what I do
big cyclist
big computer user
big person all around
6'4"
235lbs

on a similar music note
(music note...I crack myself up even when I don't aim to!)
check out ALL MUSIC and search the history of various bands
quite a resource

and once again
check out the MINOR THREAT LIVE DVD
it is from their early days

baby grant is sleeping
so far so easy
but it was this way with Dean for the first few weeks
all that was followed by a few months of crying
nothing more than a memory now
it was nerver racking
but not so much that we ever freak out too much
as it was our first child and we figured that is just what children did
and
in the scheme of things...Dean was healthy and strong
so what if he cried?!?!?
and that flexing and screaming was working out
he was getting fit and strong for a long life to come
SKATEBOARDS/SKATEBOARDING
skateboards
I was never much of a skater
skated some street and a little ramp
well the ramps were not little, they were big, but I skated them infrequently
never really got off the ground, total land dweller
no more than dropping in, riding fakie, carving, some sketchy grinds, and some rock and roll slides that never reentered the ramp
all this with no pads and no helmet
running out when bailing a trick

transportation and recreation were more my thing on the skateboard
sure we use to head down to G-town in the 80's and skate the brick quarter pipes by the canal
but it was as much about hanging out as it was about skating
just something to do

hardesty and I would head to the tall parking garages in downtown bethesda and mess around with the tricks there
but it was often more about a hoot, a holler, and a giggle
we would run the stairs up and skate down doing long glorious power slides on the sharp 190 degree downhill turns
wearing down our leather tipped gardening gloves
running over our hands
wiping out on the slick concrete
never careing that a car may be coming up as we sped down
friday nights of a simplier time
not just a simplier time of my life
a simplier world
now bethesda is so crowded you could never expect to have a vacant 6-8 story parking garage for skateboarding

the most fun skating in those tall garages was the CATAMARAN!
each of us would sit on our own decks
then we would put our feet on the other's decks, each foot to the outside of the seated rider
then we grasped hands and hiked out
the speed was awesome!
the outside rider had to really get back
and the whip sensation was phenomenal

I recall one friday night getting some of the younger more pumped skaters to join us in the garage right behind Bethesda Square
these guys were all use to living at the ramp
pushing their tricks farther, further, and higher
they were all reminded the simpler more laughable aspects of skating

here is a downhill ride that is a rush to watch
not sure who it is, but it makes me want to go out there and break my wrist

soon Dean and Grant are going to be wanting these

transitions
it is tough dealing with transitions
the change of seasons has its drawback
when it is not fall and not winter and then when it is not winter and not spring can be a hassle
rain instead of snow
and muddy earth rather than firm hardpack
even walking the dogs in Rock Creek is a hazard
not just to me, but to the environment
all I have to do is walk the dogs and I can see that there is still too much ice and too much mud to bother with spinning out in the woods
sure I poke in for a few yards here and there
but only to scope it out
early morning and cold days are the only option till spring truly arrives

I was going to create few metaphors about transition
maybe something about hair, like that awkward inbetween stage
where someone's hair is not short and not long
a pony tail turns out to be more of a dork knob than anything else

but who am I to talk
when it comes to hair it is all or none
and for the past many years I have been leaning to none
don't see that changing any time soon

Mat People-
The Mat People are here, there, they are everywhere!

Next time you leave the house open your eyes. If you look closely enough you will see them. They are waiting for the bus, they are riding their bikes, and they are getting into their cars. The mat people may be your co-workers and some might even be your friends. They are growing in numbers and they are growing in strength. If you look for them, you will see them. I am certain they are there. The were noticeable before, but more noticeable now. The movement many have start way east and them moved way to the west, but now it is here in the east, I see it in DC. The Mat People Movement seems to be mainly in the cities, but may be taking over in the suburbs as well. Who knows....the mat people may start to show up in rural areas as well, but less likely. I fear that if I am not careful, I too may become a mat person. The pull is strong, but the resistance is also great.
We will see.
Time will tell.
We will see.
Let me know what you find.

Are the mat people in your hometown?
Are you a mat person?
Sugar Cereal:
An old high school friend of mine was telling my brother and me about his father's recent marriage. His father had been traveling and met a woman in Cuba, they hit it off, she became his girlfriend. After some time she became pregnant. Marriage seemed like the right thing to do. When this same high school friend shared this info with another old friend, this shrewd hipster had some solid advice, "don't get married till you see the baby....If the baby comes out looking like Captain Crunch you are cool, but it the baby comes out looking like Coco Puffs no need to get married."
The baby came out looking like Coco Puffs.
They got married and as far as I know the baby boy is his.
We believe what we want to believe.

There was not that worry here....my son came out looking like QUISP!

QUISP!

Is that a Rob Roskoff skateboard headed to earth?
WISDOM ABOUT MARRIAGE:
As a married man I am always seeking advice from those with more experience with the whole concept of marriage. Some more mature friends of mine are able to share with me advice on why certain marriages failed or why others succeeded.
My neighbor/friend John once told me that after many years of marriage the relationship of husband and wife becomes more like that of brother and sister. Without pause or hesitation I responded, "that is fine for you and Sara Beth, you guys are from West Virginia and can still have a healthy sex life, but what about the rest of us!"

Death of the Elephant
Marco Pantani, who wanted/preferred to be called the pirate, died of a Heart Attack
This may be another blemish on the sport of cycling as they investigate further and find that drugs were a contributing cause to his death.
My heart goes out to all that were close to him. It is sad for anyone to die so young, no matter what the cause.
He is just one of many professional athletes that got wrapped up in the use of drugs to reach his highest potential. It is wrong. I disapprove. But that seems to be how the athletes play the game now days.

SIDEWALK CHALK
There are many ways to communicate to the world around us. The electronic methods are good, but they have a certain failing....they only contact those with the technology and to those who tune in to it. As I know....people can too easily tune out an electronic message, the DELETE key is always within reach.
Posting of Bills and Flyers can be a good way to communicate an idea, but there are those who get very angry at the staples in the bark or the tape around the tree. So the message is not always seen as people are more concerned with the posted flyer rather than its message.
Some years ago I discovered the joy of SIDEWALK CHALK!
Not sure what my first message topic was.....
It may have been a love note to my wife, an announcement of her passing the CFA exam, or a Halloween Greeting. Somehow that method of communication stuck! I became a the Sidewalk chalk Bandit. With the birth of our first son Dean I posted all of his specs on the stairs in front of our house on Lamont Street. I was a proud father, and the community enjoyed the shared information. Then as each of our friends and neigbors had children I then made similar announcements on their stairs about their new born child.
So, with the birth of our second son, Grant. I have again put out the welcome home sign for lisa. Not balloons, not a giant stork in our front yard, but various pastel colors scribbled onto the stairs and the walk in front of our house.
GOOD WORK!

Lisa and Grant are back from the hospital
thus far no jealousy has been exhibited by Roscoe, Brutus, or Dean
certainly there will be some
I was jealous of Lisa's love and affection for Roscoe and Brutus
and later Roscoe and Brutus were envious of Lisa's love for Dean
she is just one person
she only has one set of hands
and for the next few months those hands will be concentrating more on Grant than anyone else

2.14.2004

Valentines Day finally means something to me.
At 1:37 am at Sibley Hospital in Northwest Washington DC my wife gave birth to our second son, Grant. It was a smooth pregnancy with a smooth deliver, certainly there were some speed bumps here and there, but in comparision to the world of "complications" we were very very lucky. My healthy wife had a healthy pregnancy and a healthy drug free delivery. She screamed and shouted with a red face with a number of veins on her temples, yet she did not complain. It was a funny thursday and friday as she went about her daily business nowing full well that was on the path to delivery. She worked on Friday but left early. Knowing she left early, on my ride home I took a path that would take me to the parking lot at the Melvin Hazen trail. Often when she gets home early she picks up the dogs and takes a hike in the woods before getting Dean. She deserves a moments piece, some time to herself, some time away. But being a protective father I tracked her down. As I did not know how far along she had gone or which direction to find her I shouted out too the dogs in am personalized dog call that I have.
It is some sort of american indian chinese influenced yodel, "hok-hok" The dogs came running. Not immediately. But as I hiked in with my bike at my side I got around a few turns and my voice carried the rest. There was lisa within view up on a switchback nearly out of ear shot (not far actually, this is Rock Creek, not the Grand Canyon) We relayed messages. Unable to decifer the full message, but was able to let her know that I did not want her to have the baby there, and that if he is born there....we are not naming him Melvin (after the trail) She laughed and agreed, but guess not everything translated, I got Dean, leaving the bike outside and strutting down the school halls like some strange coal miner of the future with my gortex gear, helmet, and helmet light, the backpack and the lights strapped about added to the image (no lights on, I am not that geeky)
Lisa got back home with the dogs. She laughed. I could tell she had gone to pick up Dean. We hung at the dinner table and discussed the night's events to come. I was scheduled for work that night, we wondered if lisa was biologically scheduled for delivery. We discussed issues that should have been discussed months ago and we packed bags that should have been packed weeks ago. I called my dad and asked him if he was available for coming over and watching Dean if we were headed to the hospital that night, he agreed to offered his services at our call. So I scurried about and got some things ready and also got ready to head back to work. Went out front, got in my truck and headed to work.

some of this music is proving to have some staying power
The Jam is definitely an under appreciated contribution

oh shit
just remembered
we are having a cleaning lady come tomorrow
I better clean up
is this so we will not be embarressed
lisa has cleaned up the house to such a level
that I asked her to call Doris and tell her that she does not need to come
lisa laughed like I was joking
but the bathrooms and the kitchen could use a wipe with a damp rag
by now Doris knows what to expect
she arrives, the house is spotless
and not because it is always this clean
but because lisa makes it so the night before her arrival
I imagine that Doris takes the money that she makes for this cleaning job and throws a party
and throws it in our house while we are at work
she takes the time she would use to clean the house to throw a party
then once the party is over
it is actually dirty enough that she has something to do
then she cleans up leaving no trace
but how would I know....I am at work

I need a web cam!
that way I would know what Doris does when she is supposed to clean our clean house
and what Roscoe and Brutus are doing all day long
I know that they are barking at the mailman, Harold and I have talked at lenght about their special relationship
an additional plexiglass shield is on the door
our placid domesticated pets transform into CUJO ONE AND CUJO TWO at the sight and sound of the mailman
class has been broken
blood has been drawn, luckily Brutus' and not Harold's
tonight my ride home took a very similar path to last night
the single speed is growing to be a good fit
the curbs and the stairs are more natural
still no air
but when was there ever any air?
those big wheels like to roll
and my body likes to stay on the ground

as I pedaled about my mind wandered
my memory told me of old routes now unavailable
national security is one thing
construction is another
the roads downtown have changed
don't expect to ride or drive on the roads directly in front of the White House
Jersey Barriers and crossing guards with bullet proof vests and glocks; one in the chamber /17 in the clip;

so I spun down memory lane with no set route
just a basic direction
take whichever path is flowing
whichever lights are green
go where there is the least resistance
always modifying the course
it can be fun just let "the journey be the destination"
as I meandered about the business district past the Federal buildings towards the mall I witnessed before me that the city has changed
and keeps changing
and not entirely for the better
not at all for the better

I am not historian
but it seems to me that when Pierre L'Enfant designed the mall
it was designed, mapped out, a scale model was crafted, and the actual building process went on from there
there was to be green space outlined by trees and surrounded by buildings
I have felt like a small figurine under one of those trees
not in this time
but in a past time on a conference room table as Pierre sold a room full of men wearing powder coated wigs on his ideas
well
there are more and more buildings
and now more and more monuments that he had ever planned
(Vietnam, then Korean War, now WWII)
there are also subways, buses, and lots of cars
and then some more cars
then maybe one or two horse drawn carriages
these monuments and buildings are taking up more and more of the green space
areas that were once great vistas of the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial are obstructed
enough is enough
we need the MALL ANNEX II
no more memorial
no more museums
the National Museum of the Native American blocks what was a wonderful view of the Capitol from Independence
sure it is a great looking building, but could it not have been great looking our near Dulles Airport?
or maybe underground with just a few hidden trap door enterances
afterall...we don't want natural light on art or artifacts

the 4th of July use to be a great time for set a blanket out on the grass for a picnic
well if you can find any
more paved trails
more paths
more monuments
more visitors centers
again less is more
less is more attractive
less is more sensible

but those with a concrete vision have never biked on the mall
never had a date with carry out chinese food on the mall
never thrown a frisbee on the mall
never attended a protest, a ralley, or a quasi-political concert on the mall
never hooked up beneith a tree on the mall
they may see the mall as a photo op when in town from Kansas
but the mall is more than that
it is a place to fly kites
to play kick ball
to toss a frisbee
or even ride your bike

Okay
today I am totally ripping off ROBLOG
I am not just stealing style
right now I am posting the exact information!
well
sort of
some of the same links
and similar information
Turns out we are both Henry!

You are STATE OF ALERT! Very pissed off in general,
you don't mess around. Even rednecks don't like
to get in fights with you because you are
crazy. You aren't afraid to promote yourself,
not to mention you are a loud mouth. Outspoken
in what you believe, you will ALWAYS be there
to help out and fight for your friends and
those you love. And of course to create a
whilwind of senseless violence.

WHAT D.C. HARDCORE BAND ARE YOU?
brought to you by Quizilla

guess THE JAM was not an option
they were pissed with a fashion sense!
this map is a tad vague
my passport is less than impressive
yet it seems like a good deal is colored in
no alaska
no hawaii
yet since I have traveled in the US
it exaggerates my experience
sure, the stories are my own
each trip was a wonderful experience
no visit was long enough to do more than maybe take a few snap shots and learn a few of the native greetings
then time to head home
perhaps in our family's future we can plot our course overseas
an alternative learning period for the whole family
something that could make the record skip
break the rhythm and direction of some of American culture*

create your own visited country map
or write about it on the open travel guide

*American: I hate to use the term American to try and describe someone from the United States. It is a tad ethnocentric for one country of so many countries within two hemispheres/two continents to claim the term American for themselves. We are all Americans, but we are the ugly ones (although I try not to be.)
.

this evening was well spent
my pregnant wife hung with Dean
work held me back a little late
and to shake that feeling of work I headed the opposite direction of home on the Karate Monkey
rode the wave of traffic downtown
caught a good rhythm
held good speed
but really
how fast can I spin the 32X17
passed the monuments and crossed the 14th Street Bridge
checked for penguins as the ice floated down the Potomac river below me
got onto the Mt Vernon trail and headed towards the Key Bridge into Georgetown
a short loop
but a healthy spin considering the gearing I am pusthing
over the bridge after a stellar view of the city from the other side of the river
back into traffice
buses, cabs, and potholes
plenty of obstacles to test the senses of this still somewhat forgein machine
dropped into the park to cross under some very epic arched bridges
Q far more spectacular than P
but Q's size no rival for Mass Ave then Conn then Calvert
the ability to breath in the views was broken up by the need to concentrate on remaining patches of ice
some sections barely navigatable on foot
arrived home
grabbed roscoe and brutus and headed for a quick march through the woods
it was either ice, mud, or wet leaves
in the dark shadows I must have looked like a 90 year old man
as I tensed up with each baby step fearing falling on my ass

checked in with lisa and dean
we all giggled and played
it was short and sweet as I was off to a local pub
for some bar food with my brother and an old high school buddy jason
we laughed
we covered a lot of years
and a good deal of the same old stories
it was a good time
our little reunions should happen more often
so we can talk in the present instead of the past
it is tough to alwas catch up or reminise

on the trip through downtown
passed an old old friend, scott
he is a lifer, riding an old british style 3 speed
and not in a retro or cool way
got his number and am going to try to put one of my old lead sleds into his hands
a fully built low end mountainbike from the mid 80's with thumb shifters and bear traps will be a step forward
not need for me to cling to these low end retro parts
it is an old Nashbar bike that one of my wife's coworker had
he let me grab it
I figured I could donate it to Chain Reaction
but this is a more immediate donation passing it on to Scott
had thought of handing it over to Crackhead Tommy
as I spotted him in Malcom X Park the other day as I manovered the terraced stairs on the 29inch wheels
he had a good road bike that he just found in an alley

that site is really bad
information based sites are great
but they do not have to be ugly with dead links
wish I had the time to figure out a tad more web stuff to spruce it up
but with two dogs, a wife, a 2 year old son, another son on the way, and a serious BLOG habit I clearly do not have the time
that MAP below is the first image that I have hosted/posted my BLOG
many if not most of the states that I have "visited"
I have barely tasted
many I just passed through
never to return to again
road trips in my early to mid 20's
glorious free times
they were amazing
and you know what
at that moment I knew that they were amazing
but perhaps not to the highest level
the power and energy of youth
I like the dinosaurs that that my rein on earth would be forever
not that I am living in any sort of ice age
my life has just evolved into something different

create your own visited states map
or write about it on the open travel guide

This is a Map of the STATES I HAVE VISITED
RED being the States I have been to or been through

Green would be the states that I have yet to visit

there is no option or color for states I have no intention of ever visiting
if there were
Texas would be that color
No need to ever go there
Had I never traveled to New Mexico I would have created a healthy buffer between myself and Texas

Learning to be a good parent...
(when the ice melts, the temp rises, and the races start I will be more focused on cycling, until then....it is all about family on my BLOG)
((and if it snows.....you will hear of my antics on the XC Skis))

right now Dean is two and half
he wins every battle
it is not that he is spoiled
he is strong willed
lisa and I need to find some tactics to start winning SOME of these battles

the battles are small but they comeback to bite you....
"I wanna sleep in the mommy bed."
so rather than fight it
we take him and lie him down in the mommy bed
lisa and I are both tired and are not looking for a fight
it was tough enough to convince him to go to bed
the time is rapidly approaching 10
neither of us have really had a chance to put our feet up after a long day at work
so he falls asleep and is transferred to "the big boy bed" after he drifts off to a deep sleep
the failure of this
he then requests to sleep in the mommy bed the next night, and then everynight
each night we buckle for the same reasons
too tired to fight
tired from carrying him up the stairs and placing him gently in the bottom bunk of his bed
tired from a long day of work
tired from just a long day
we put him down in his bed and tip toe away
only to hear a stamped of little footsteps
and then when he enters the room and announces, "I don't want to go to bed."
the game starts again, to convince him to go to bed
our strategies are different
I let him play, as I see he is getting tired
I offer for him to take the toy he is playing with to bed with him
there have been nights where he was put in bed with several Buzz Lightyear action figures a few dinosaurs
and sometimes whatever was in bed from the night before
then once in bed lisa and I will sit idlely
waiting to hear those footsteps of maybe a stealth approach
where he just appears like a ghost
standing silent at the door with his "fire" (his pacifier, used for sleeping only) and his blanket (which has no cute name)

then once in bed and asleep
lisa has a few moments to her self
well, maybe a few seconds, where she cleans up the house and preps for the day to come
washes up and gets ready for bed
climbs into bed, can not read even if she would like to, as the light would wake Dean
as for me, the night owl in me grants me more time
I have time to work on freelance design projects, tune up one of my many bikes, or read a good book
although I have the time for any of these activities, my actions usually involve a glass of wine, sometimes two

if I am lucky enough there is Monster Garage, Monster House, American Chopper
if not to save my thumb from carpal tunnel syndrome I tape the channel scan button down
and just watch the channels change
it goes around and around and around
as the clock approaches midnight I question why I did not go to bed an hour ago
head up stairs
brush my teeth
flip the light on in the bedroom to see if Dean, Roscoe, or Brutus are in my spot
climb into bed

fall asleep only to wake up to dean at 5am demanding an apple juice
now, it would be easy enough to say no and go back to bed
but in my ignorant state I gave him a sippy cup full of juice several times before
so now it is expected
as they say, "it is tough to put the genie back in the bottle"

we pay for our mistakes
we script our own misery
this little battles all add up
right now Dean is not only winning the battle, he is winning the War

in an effort to make a moment easier
we are making our lives harder
Lisa and I are currently regrouping and planning our next offensive
we want Dean happy but we also want our lives back
or at least a solid nights sleep from time to time

since this was written we now have Dean sleeping in his own bed
and sleeping through the night
he gets up early
climbs into our bed
he wiggles and he giggles
often kicks me in the head
on my lucky days he falls back asleep and we wake up late
on most days we both wake up and I console him as mommy goes off to work
then we do our thing
we walk the dogs
I drop dean off at daycare
then I get on my bike and head to work

RALPH DON'T RUN!

http://www.ralphdontrun.net

this weekend I saw a woman hammering a DEAN FOR AMERICA poster into the frozen ground just a few blocks down from my mother's house in Bethesda
while watching this I thought....'I would like to have one of those Dean posters for my son Dean.'
then I thought about the whole notion of campaign posters
then my Adult ADD took that thought one step further
I would like a John Kerry, Howard Dean, John Edwards, Wesley Clark, Dennis Kucinich, and Even Al Sharpton poster in my yard. Hammer them all into one tall totem pole like stake. Then have a small sign at the bottom that read, "ANY BODY BUT BUSH!"

good night
would love to hang out and blog
but need to go to bed
This is a newswire from the Associated Press....
this story explains why I do not own a gun
I think that the cyclist should be rewarded for his reserve. Each morning on my short 15 minute commute to work I would shoot several people for similar behavior (this is said tongue and cheek, but emotions do run high and that is why such things do happen)
Although I was not there, I find it safe to say that it was more than the obscene gesture that ticked this cyclist off. Hope he gets a good lawyer and a sympathetic jury, but I would figure that he is ready to face a stiff sentence and a less than understanding car driving judge and jury.

BC-BRF--Bicycle Road Rage,0188
Bicyclist charged with shooting motorist in fight over obscene
gesture
MONROEVILLE, Pa. (AP) - A bicyclist shot a truck driver in the
arm during a confrontation that began when the man pedaling the
bike made an obscene gesture, police said.
Robert Urick, 41, was charged with attempted homicide,
aggravated assault and weapons offenses.
William Nicoletti, 51, told police that when he drove past Urick
in his pickup truck Saturday, Urick made an obscene gesture.
Nicoletti said he turned around and drove toward Urick, who
pulled out a pistol and threatened to shoot, police said. Officers
said Urick then reached into the truck and shot Nicoletti once in
the arm, and rode away on his bike.
Nicoletti rammed Urick off his bike and they fought briefly
until Urick fled again, police said.
Police said they arrested Urick, of Monroeville, later that day,
and he told them he made the gesture because Nicoletti had told him
to get off the road.
Urick remained in jail Monday in lieu of $100,000 bail. A
hearing was set for Feb. 17.

oh yea,
I forgot to mention I HATE GUNS!I see very little need for anyone to own a gun. Sure I can appreciate sport and hunting, but who hunts with a handgun?
And for those who have guns for home security....if I really felt that I was at risk where I lived...I WOULD MOVE!
the ice on the trails would work great for downhill ice skating!
not quite the light and airy powder I need for learning to XC Ski

Dean and I always take the dogs through the woods to Rosemount
it is a short hike that meanders through a small section of Rock Creek Park
he walked a section
holding my hand
and slipping and falling with each steps
limber enough not to pull a muscle as he did the plits
never hitting the ground as I had his right hand with my left
while my right firmly grasped my hot cup of morning coffee

after enough slipping and falling
and very slow progress
I carried Dean on my shoulders
without getting very far he wanted down
he did not necessarily want to walk
I think he just did not want to come slamming down from 7 feet in the air!
the short descent down the path was all ice

then Kona, a plump 2 year old Burnese Mountain Dog, took his stick
and Ajax, an overly energetic Golden Retriever, kept jumping on him with his wet paws
the Ajax wet paws to the chest and nose to the face meant nothing to him
but Dean cried that Kona had run off with his stick
that stick was selected for his morning session of "Fighter Power*"

ah
mornings
*Fighter Power: an imaginary game created by Lisa and Dean. This game involves a stick for each participant. Dean's stick always being larger than his opponents. The objective? Unknown. There appears to be some Wizardry and perhaps some Martial Arts. Occassionally Dean will be hit with an imaginary blow that causes him to fall to the ground and play dead. Swooshing and Shooshing noises are to be used throught play. Play at your own Risk!

some things in life are just too absurd to be true
if these same things happened in a movie
well, they would be too stupid and obvious for anyone to laugh
when I got an email from an unknown lawyer asking for some design services I could not help but laugh vigorously outloud
judging from the last name and name this person was clearly Asian, the last name is CHEN
well the first name and middle names may be more than this individual felt like dealing with
so he/she (as I can not tell from the name) went ahead and Americanized his/her name, and calls himself/herself Kit
well, Kit Chen
thanks for making me laugh
this following definition was sent his/her way
not sure if the he/she makes the connection or intends the connection

Main Entry: kitch·en
Pronunciation: 'ki-ch&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English kichene, from Old English cycene, from Late Latin coquina, from Latin coquere to cook -- more at COOK
Date: before 12th century
1 : a place (as a room) with cooking facilities
2 : the personnel that prepares, cooks, and serves food

picture him/her in court...
the judge asks for a personal consultation....
"could Kitchen please approach the bench"
sounds like something from Alice in Wonderland!

after a quick GOOGLE
I find that Kit Chen is a name shared with an Asian female singer as well as several others

Life Choices: we all have to work (well most of us)

there are many paths in life
not everyone is cut out to work the basic 9-5
while others do not gel well with others in the work place
some of us just can not get out of bed in the morning
there may be those who think that they can create their own path
for some this has worked while for others it has failed

people have started their own record labels
many have folded and only a few have survived and fewer have prospered

restaurants open and close all the time
turn over is rapid

everyone thinks that they could do a better job than their boss
chances are your boss started their company because they felt that they could do a better job than their boss (if your company has that dynamic)

every drunk thinks that they could open and run a successful bar
every cyclist could open the perfect bicycle shop
every courier feels that they could run the perfect courier company
but there is more to the coffee shop than putting a cup of hot coffee on the table

a friend of mine from high school is taking a break from her pursuit to be an actress to start her own company
her company is a little different
she has invented a product
a hip and fun watch
check it out!

I wish her well
she is having fun
not sure if she will make the Fortune 500
but hopefully she can pay the rent

SINGLE SPEEDS: Instructions on how to make a single speed

Here is a link to a site that offers helpful hints to creating your own single speed with the bike you already have.
No need for horizontal drop outs.
No need for a Singleator

Keith Bontrager shares some ideas on how to make an inexpensive single speed

good stuff
especially good for those who want to make a 2 or three speed
(front chain rings for the 2 speeds)

SINGLE SPEEDS
BIKES AND PROPER FIT

(well, my single speeds)
this morning I woke up to a cold rainy morning
lisa was home from work today to attend an open house at a local nursery school
she handled dropping Dean off at Rosemount Daycare
I handled walking Roscoe and Brutus
it was wet and cold
my jacket did a good job of keeping my upper body dry
while my pants did a good job of soaking up every drop of icy cold water
it was near miserable
I took the leashes of the dogs and headed to the basement to put on some cycling gear for a short and direct ride into work
but I figured I would take my commuter with fenders
as I moved in closer to pull it out from behind the some other bikes I saw that it was lacking pedal, pedals that are now on the Karate Monkey
so rather than swapping the pedals back
I figured that with the ice and snow that still remained in the alley and the city streets that my old single speed which has clip on fenders would do me fine
I grabbed it
and climbed up the steps out the back
as I slipped on the icy walkway out back I put the bike down to offer balance and support
I could feel the rear wheel was flat
I went back to get a pump
it was late
it seemed best to just fill up the rear tire and head down the road
the tire seemed that it would hold air
not two spins of the cranks and I could already feel how obnoxiously small this 20 inch frame with its 26 inch wheels is for my 6 foot 4 inch frame
as I pedaled into work my mind went through numerous trail rides and uncountable commutes on this diminutive bike
it clearly did not fit me
the Karate Monkey had shown me the light
there was no going back
no need to cling to this thing
it does not work as even a bar bike at this point
the KONA served me well
it never knew it was too small for me

anyone want a 20 inch Kona Huma Huma Nuka Nuka A' Pu a Ah?
going cheap
ready to go fast
too small for me...what was I thinking

the internet is wild and whacky place
it is sort of like a party
and like a party
there are often many familar faces
and then there are also strange faces
first impressions are important
(not my strong suit)
as I BLOG on about this and that
I find that occassionally a stranger tunes in reads my stuff
if they choose, they can drop me an email
this is always appreciated
to me
a conversation via email or over the web
is no different than a converstation in person
to me it as if we are speaking standing face to face
like several meetings
several emails add up, contacts and connections become friends
well
this evening while checking my emails I got a message from someone unknown to me
my YAHOO account had tossed the message into my BULK MAIL
but, being the lonely guy that I am I scanned my BULK mail before hitting the mass delete button
sure enough there were a few fish caught in the net
or perhaps
there were a few sea turtles caught in the tuna net
well
I caught those sea turtles and sent them on their way (my inbox)
one of those messages was from someone at THE INSIGHT (http://www.the-insight.com/) [just realized I am using Internet Explorer, on the MAC there are certain features lacking in EXPLORER that exist in NETSCAPE]
back to my point
well
so I check out this site, The INSIGHT
it is pretty, well designed, actually almost hypnotic
but it does not have any information
just links
or perhaps
the building blocks of links, links to no where
it was actually a tad weird
like I was John Denver walking into that white room looking to meet God and only finding an empty white room with a speaker in it
in any case
they made a deal with me
and as it does not seem like a deal to the devil
I will keep that deal
as they are linking to my BLOG
I am linking to their site, THE INSIGHT
but I am still curious how they found me
and more odd
how did the link me to ASHTANGA YOGA
guess I made mention of it in a recent post
iPOD

CBS Story an iPOD user who was frustrated with the fact that his iPOD battery had gone dead and that APPLE did not make a replacement battery, but rather expected the iPOD users to just toss out the old device and buy a new one! UNLIKELY

well...
this NYC based artist did not only get mad...he got creative!
He expressed his anger and frustration with a little movie.

iPOD's Dirty Secret

view the movie
read the story
get the wrapup from them
as it is time for me to leave work

Here is a very funny test...
this test will mean very little to most
it is primarily a DC thing, for those who were pre or post adolescent in the 80's
these people would have had to of been interested in DC Hardcore (local punk rock)

here it is

SUPERBOWL SUNDAY and its IRONIC TWIST

It is a funny thing, this dance between the SUPERBOWL and the advertising that surrounds it. In most cases it is about the advertising. We like to think that the show Seinfeld was created to entertain us, but that would be as naive as to think that the newspaper was created to inform us. Well sorry, that is just not the case. The newspaper and the television are there in front of us to help buy product. The newspaper for example costs significantly less to purchase than it costs to produce. Advertising is placed throughout the paper acts to bring down the cost of the newspaper. The advertisers are hoping that the readers will view the ads (consciously or subconsciously) and then buy their product, apparently it works. After all, they are still doing it. The entertaining sitcoms that are on the TV in front of us are there for the same purpose. All those cute and clever little sitcoms with the hot wives and the dumpy husbands were created to get us to sit in front of the television so that we see the ads and thus go out mindlessly and purchase the product.

Well, the SUPERBOWL acts with an ironic twist. People tune in to see the ads. The ads are as talked about as the game itself. Sure this year Janet's breast is overshadowing both the game and the ads, but her breast will lose steam and then people will again focus on the issue at hands...the ads. I tunned in during the halftime show in a hope to catch the top ads, well, the halftime show itself drove me away. I did chance on seeing Janet's breast. My two and half year old son was in the room. I was not shocked, not angered, nor was I fearing that my son would have been effected in any way by this. It did seem a little out of character for Justin to be so "grabby," that just does not seem to be his style. That just goes to show you that just when you think you know someone, they show you a side that you never knew they had.

SUPERBOWL ADS

It took some time. Eventually I was able to wade through the ads on this site. They were clever and entertaining. There are my own personal favorites. Check it out and see the ads that everyone is talking about at the watercooler.
