What is interesting about this diagram is that both cyclists are in teh bike lane. Even though the "no" cyclist is in the bike lane he/she is still in danger. Look how wide the car lane is to the right.

sigh

I once went on a ride led by a bicycling advocate who was giving a tour of new bike lanes. He told everyone to ride on the outside line. In his view bike lanes are just buffer zones.

I am currently trying very hard to get the city to slow the speed of traffic on my street

after a certain level of harassment they are doing "a study"

since the study is going to take some time
as these things tend to do
I asked for a quick fix

that quick fix is a bike lane

but
there is a good deal of bicycle traffic on this street
but
the door zone makes it a potentially dangerous place to ride

my goal is to create the illusion of a thinner stretch of road
which would force the drivers to slow down to feel more comfortable

we will see what happens

That sounds like a great way to slow car traffic. The bike lane would also remind people that your road has bike traffic.
