there is a limit to how long an athlete can cash in on their athletic peak in this sort of way

I'd be interested to see exactly what this is for, too.
That said, having cancer can wreak havoc on one's immune system. So, someone like Lance, who came back to do some impressive and inspiring things, for a spokesperson (in relation to fighting fatigue and strengthening the immune system) kind of makes sense.
I see your point about the timing of endorsements to athletic peak, though.
