There's a similar thing here in Louisville. Just the other day my wife and I were commenting on how lame those fake trolleys are. Sort of a lingering insult to the injury of the loss of actual trolleys.
Been following your site lately, we're planning on moving to the Baltimore/DC area in the next few months—it's good to see some fellow bike enthusiasts there.
