when did they start naming Hurricanes after men?

can you tell me...
When did they start naming Hurricanes after men?
I thought that they were always named after women

Men's names were introduced in 1979. There haven't been a lot of male named major hurricanes that made landfall--Hugo in '89 and Andrew in '92 are the only ones that spring to mind, granted they were monsters. Hugo was cat 4 or strong cat 3 when it hit SC and Andrew was the third strongest storm on record when it scrubbed off south Florida.
