DC needs a pump track...

yesterday was parent teacher conferences
which mean... NO SCHOOL FOR THE BOY!

so... after meeting with the teachers we had time for an adventure
I loaded the Honda Element up with my boys... a kid from down the block... and assortment of bicycles
we drove just north of Columbia Maryland on Route 29 and went to The Rockburn Skills Park

EPIC.

we had a blast... the boys were pumping the track rather than pedaling the track by the time we finished

but really...
the drive is not cost effective for us to go here as frequently as we would like to go
and really
the climb up the skill ladder is slow if the practice is infrequent

DC NEEDS A PUMP TRACK

we have baseball diamonds and we have basketball courts
there are astro turf soccer fields and indoor swimming pools
BUT THERE IS NO... I REPEAT NO!... sports facilities for bicycles!

PUMP TRACK AND LEGAL MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS WOULD ENRICH LIVING IN WASHINGTON DC!

I think every town needs a pumptrack/skills park. Would love to see one here in Rochester.

Philly is getting one. I'm on the committee. Yesterday I met with Phila University's students of Urban design. They are making designs for the track as their semester project.

bicycle sport infrastructure.... not ever sport needs to involve chasing a ball!

just as communities are seeing skateboarding and skate parks as part of the system they need to start to include cycling

pump tracks are the perfect place to start

and for those that want to chase balls
we give them Bike Polo

I need to get more involved in trying to make this happen... watching from the distance how this Rockburn thing happened
