so... I started a job with Capital Bike Share
YES!
working as a Mobile Tech
riding a bicycle to assigned Capital Bike Share stations to Inspect - Tune - Repair the rental fleet
Rod Smith is the Capital Bike Share Mobile Tech Lead
as the team lead... Rod also trains the new recruits
during my first week I was being instructed on the Check List of repairs to look for,
how to handle the repairs,
and then
how to log the repairs in our mobile application
the first thing each BIKE CHECKER has to do when they arrive at the Bike Station
is to lock your bicycle
ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BICYCLE!
it is easy enough to forget
at some stations
things are so remote
there is no passerby traffic
while other stations there is a flurry of activity around you
so... during my day if I had not locked my bicycle
I was reminded to do so
one day on my first week...
I had not seen it
but Rod had removed my lock from my locked bike
and then reminded me to... ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BICYCLE!
now... I am not sure how many times he played this move
but... I was confident that I had locked the bike
yet I did not get indignant on the issue
there was no "I swear I locked it"
but rather.. oh darn... "I will be sure to lock my bike each time from here on out"
as a father...
excuses are exhausting
changed behavior is what is most important
not a backtracking excuse of this or that
but what I had not realized...
Rod has a master key
he used his key to unlock my bike
to "haze me"
to "tease me"
well... on my last day I asked Rod to take me Marshalls or TJMAX so I could get him a gift for training me
seems some of these spots are no longer downtown
went to Macy's
Macy's had what I was looking for but not at the price I was willing to spend
Rod was waiting out front while I shopped...
it was not an immediate in and out
had to find the items
then find the price on the items
only to then walk out empty handed
so...
when I walked out onto the sidewalk I saw Rod standing with his bicycle behind him
music playing on his BlueTooth speaker
I noticed...
his bike does not appear to be locked
gently I pulled the bicycle out from behind Rod
slowly the music moved away from him
Mick sang... "I can't get no... no satisfaction"
as I pulled the bicycle away from Rod and moved behind the large pilar where neither the bicycle or I could be seen I waited
not long... just a few seconds
then I walked around the pillar with the bike
at this moment I saw Rod... it was CLASSIC!
Rod dodge one way... looking for his bike... then the other!
the bike was missing...
I know the feeling!
we all know the feeling!
a total Pee Wee's Big Adventure Moment
only a few second scare
did not want to put Rod into a Panic
laughing I returned the bike and put my hand to Rod's Heart to make sure his heart was not coming out of his chest and said... "always lock your bike"
THE ROOKIE GOT THE MASTER!
Great little final moment on the last day of training...
at the start of my next week... I am working SOLO
