car driver to bicycle rider exchanges tend not to go well...

not this man's proudest moment
it unfolds ugly
then ends moderately funny
no one looks good in this scenario

Bike Around the Bomb... ride next week

Bike Around the Bomb
Sunday August 9th
eventpage on Facebook

from their page I cut and paste
the photos... eye candy to go along with the post

"What would it look like if a nuclear bomb were dropped on downtown D.C.?

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To commemorate these events and stand up for the elimination of all nuclear weapons, we’ll be biking through downtown D.C., tracing the distance around the Nagasaki bomb blast in solidarity.

To RSVP, go to www.globalzero.org/bike."

RACE REPORT: Wednesday at Wakefield #1, #2, and #3... but only after reading about Wednesday at Wakefield #4

I think it is time to just hit PUBLISH AND POST
started this... rambled... rambled some more
stepped away... tried to make some edits
but the day is nearly a distant memory and this morning has more pressing things to tend to

it has been a while since I have raced
injury and the responsibilities of adult life stole racing from my priorities
trying to get riding and racing back into my life
Wakefield seemed like a great place to try and slip back into the game

the posts on Facebook after W@W #1 were enough to tempt and taunt me such that I promised myself at least one race at Wakefield

the lure to Wakefield came with anxiety
seeing the podium shots had me wondering about how my fitness and handling would match up
sure... I have been riding
but there has not been much time on dirt

lets and lungs are feeling pretty okay
but the handling ... I will admit... I have never been the most technically advanced mountain biker
my tires stay on the ground... air is not part of my vocabulary
but now... it has been a long time since I have lifted my front wheel

these thoughts created anxiety
racing always brings about a certain level of anxiety

best to just give this a glance and hit PUBLISH AND POST
as I am about to risk repeating myself for a third and fourth time

good thoughts going out to Logan and the whole Leaver Family...

a parent's love for their children often involves intense worrying
we had a Lyme scare a few years back

send positive thoughts to Logan and the Leaver Family
hopefully the cool waters of Lake Tahoe and their vacation set things right

Bruce Buckley snapped some wonderful photos at race number four at Wednesday at Wakefield

people suited up for the last race in the Wakefield race series
this ritual was "inflated" this year by the XXL Invitational and the Flash Flooding at Wakefield during Race #2

good times for sure

my neighbor Paul is DEAD.

Paul is DEAD

no... he was not the walrus
he was my next door neighbor
sad... saw this coming yet I did not see this coming
his health was waning... but his health had been waning since the day I met him what could be nearly a decade ago

wish I had been a better friend in his last few weeks
we spoke on the phone a few times this week
he must have known he was dying... he must have been lonely
we never speak on the phone... in the years we knew each other he may have called a dozen times... this week he called me three times... he invited me over... but our schedules were such that I was unable to do more than stop in and say hello

wish I had made a visit more of a priority
wish I had sat down on the couch and shot the shit
wish I had been a better friend
but the priorities of my life were my life
I should have heard his call for help... I should have understood his loneliness

he must have known he was dying
his health had had some dramatic moments in the past months, but he seemed to be recovering
but those calls... those calls are a symbol of his being in need

the color in his face
his mobility
sure he had lost a good deal of weight
but it is healthier to be thin than to be heavy
I did not think he would die

yes... Paul is Dead
I saw it coming... but I did not see it coming
I thought Paul was on death's door months ago
but I thought his rebound had bought him more time
not just months... but foolishly thought he would have years

alas no...
he did not have years

Paul scripted his own misery
Paul's health issues were caused by a life of poor choices
although I was not there for the party
I know Paul was

Paul's misspent youth was long and filled with addiction
in his later years he whittled down his addictions to alcohol
but that habit was not a healthy one
his life was pretty much revolved around his addiction
there are side effects to our choices

Paul is dead at 65... thought he was older... I plan to live a longer life

the house Paul owned was a group house
years ago there was a similar situation
there was a man who lived in his house who was dying
he too died when I thought he wouldn't even though I knew he would

Rest In Peace Paul
you were a good guy... even if you could be an asshole
you had a a good heart... even if it was your failing heart that lead to your demise
sorry that you did not live longer
I hope that your day to day was the life you wanted to live

kids are getting picked up from camp this weekend... headed to Raystown Lake Sunday! I miss them...

they are bigger now... these are all old photos
they are now 11 and 14
not as playful with me or the camera
we also do not spend nearly as much time together
they have their own activities
they are becoming more independent

but.. my boys are my boys
I still see them like this
until I see them and realize
I can hug them... but I have a hard time picking them up
certainly can not throw them like I once did

these photos bring back great memories
I love these boys so much I could cry

I love what they love
we love life together

I share my interests with them
I am interested in what they are interested in

I can not imagine the past many years without them in my life
I look forward to continuing our magical friendship

I will always be their father and they will always be my sons
no matter how big they get or how old they are

Anyone know of any magical opportunities?
I am In Search Of a place to live in Washington DC within logical distance to Wilson High School

The space would need to be large enough for me, my dog, and my 11 and 14 year old sons.
Getting a divorce and planning on shared physical custody. Basically having the kids alternate houses each week.

House preferred... low rent is a must...
House Sitting would be AWESOME!
The neighborhood needs to be safe. I have been looking in Glover Park and then west of 16th Street a around Carter Baron and then northeast...

Anyone know of anything?

I would be willing to share a house with one or two other people if they would gel with the sitcom situation of an adult man with a dog and two sons.

getting desperate... would like to find a place before the start of the school year at the end of next month

Al Green shared this great shot of Wakefield with me... or me!

that is me cutting through the XXL Invitational at Wakefield Regional Park
thanks for the photo Al Green
I think this photo is worthy of the BEST OF AL GREEN

stolen bike.... bike thieves suck

Wednesday at Wakefield...

Without the results it is tough to determine if switching from the SINGLE SPEED to the SQUISHY GEARED BIKE was the correct choice

It took me a few laps to learn how to pedal the geared bike. I had a tough start... got stuck in third... Julius took off in FIRST... I had a hard time reeling him in... took me until the tail end of the last lap to find his rear wheel. When I did I tried to find a way to put him in my shadow, but I got stuck in his. SO HARD TO PASS IN A MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE!

Made a pass on the powerlines right before the DIPPTY DOOS!

Got myself into first place and held myself in first place until the finish.

rewarding night on the bike

and that photo is from the Wakefield Expert Leaders... I am photoboming them (unintentionally)

Where are the photos of me racing at Wakefield? Oh... I was too lame to race with a dress... sorry XXL

What is the XXL Invitational?
Why did they throw their party the same night as a bike race?

amazing photo... more than likely a tough moment... hope Lindsay has healed up from this... mentally and physicall

Rihanna: Man Down

What happened to Sandra Bland?

the video was edited?

yes... Black Lives Matter

"absolute power corrupts absolutely"

my heart goes out to the friends and family of Sandra Bland
this was not supposed to happen
this young woman should have been given the right to live a long healthy life
a tragedy... a senseless tragedy

this sort of behavior needs to stop
the actions of our modern day police are nothing short of criminal

tubeless... I am green on all this new technology... shocks, disc brakes, and tubeless

sure I have suspension forks
sure I have disc brakes
and yes
I do have tubeless set up on a bike or two
but... I am not entirely comfortable with working on any of these set ups

that said...
I am trying to expand my comfort zone

working to better understand disc brakes
sure I can replace the brake pads... trying to manage adjustments
and soon enough
I should try to learn how to "bleed" the brakes

shocks? suspension forks?
well... I have no need to learn to rebuild a fork
that is what Trailwerks is for
but... I do need to get a better handle on maintaining my fork or at least maintaining proper pressure in my forks

and finally...
I have not set up a tubeless rim... but last night I did set up a pair of tires on a set of rims that previously had a tubeless set up
it was quite the process
only because I do not have an air compressor

borrowed one air compressor from a neighbor... and then another
neither had a decent adapter for the valve
neither bike pump air compressor had the PSI needed to set up tubeless

I jumped in my car and parked in the alley by City Bikes Adams Morgan and used their air hose on the sidewalk
the tires looked like they were holding pretty good this morning
saw a little spittle last night... but things seemed to have sealed up

looking forward to taking a spin on the RIP 9 when I get home from work
just an urban loop
try and get a feel for the bike
planning on racing it at Wakefield tomorrow

looking forward to getting the squishy bike on dirt

BIKELAW... good to have this option for representation... hope that I never need it

agreed.... "accident" is not the appropriate term

Car Accident?
Car Mistake?
no... CAR CRASH!

We don’t say “plane accident.” We shouldn’t say “car accident” either.

I finally registered my car... I had two tickets that surfaced that had them delay my renewal... one ticket from when my Landcruiser was stolen and another ticket from 1986 on my bicycle

oh yeah...
I forgot to mention the beer
the beer is GREAT!
lots of great beer.

the world view of smoking is changing

me... I have never been a fan of cigarettes

cigarettes and cyclists have always seemed to be a mismatch in my mind
yet it is quite common

that said...
there is something about the cigarette
as gross as it is
there are times when it still carries a cache of cool

but soon... that moderately positive stigma will be gone

Messengers and Couriers
cigarettes are not entirely uncommon among the messengers\couriers
