life...
the adult conversations in DC often involve several topics
two key topics
real estate and schools
there was a riddle when the kids were little
where to go to school?
then...
where to go to High School?
we took a pretty basic DC PS track
our neighborhood school was "failing"
so we were able to lottery into John Eaton
both our boys had a wonderful experience at John Eaton
not perfect... there is no perfect fit
but FANTASTIC!
the boys had some fantastic teachers and some fantastic friends
sure...
there were some duds
such is life
but over all
EXCELLENT
from John Eaton Elementary
the path of of John Eaton was to Alice Deal Middle School
our Mount Pleasant home was inbounds to Alice Deal Middle School
similar experience with Alice Deal
some hits... some misses
but it was the 8th Grade Intro to Rowing program that may have been the driving force of both of my boys trajectory
the introduction to rowing in Middle School was a great step to get involved in high school rowing
as freshman my boys hit the ground running
both the boys showing great rowing potential as high school freshman
the Wilson coaching staff is dynamic
working to guide and inspire each of my boys
leading them to be better athletes and better people
THANK YOU WILSON ATHLETICS
the rowing and the rowing program is a college track program
the percentage of rowers headed off to college is impressive
not sure if there are any other athletic programs that have these statistics
then the school choices
many of these students are going to some of the country's top schools
that said...
Wilson as a whole has an impressive graduation rate
along with an impressive college progression from its students
over all...
WILSON ROCKS!
if you want an education from Wilson High School
it is there for the taking
Wilson is an EXCELLENT high school...
as said...
both of my boys were rowers at Wilson High School
both as seniors were the STROKE seat in the Varsity 8
GO TIGERS!
so...
halfway through my younger son's senior year
Wilson High School Changed its name to Jackson Reed
yes... we know the history of Woodrow Wilson
his racist policies
his segregation actions
but...
NO ONE GOES TO Woodrow Wilson High School
kids go to WILSON High School
the name that people associate with is Wilson
nothing to do with Woodrow Wilson
growing up in the area I know a number of people who went to Wilson
then...
as an adult... I have come to know many people who went to Wilson
so many of these people are Black
I have yet to find a person who applauds the name change
change the name to WILSON high school
drop the Woodrow
and
there you have a solution and a conversation
otherwise
there is a divide
my kids went to Wilson
future kids will go to Jackson Reed
the ties will be broken
Each of my boys were the Stroke Seat as seniors for the WILSON ROWING TEAM
not the Jackson Reed whatever
as seniors
each of my boys were on the SRAA National Champion Varsity 8
AMAZING!
but the name change
it does not help the legacy
